N2  - AgNORexpression was evaluated in benign and malignant biopsy samples of breast tissue. The proportions of eells with a high (type II eells) and low eontent of AgNORs (type I eells) , as  direetly identified under the light mieroseope, were ealcu­ lated. The mean area of AgNORs per eell was also calculated for both type I and type II eells. Regard­ less of histologieal features, a  strong eorrelation was found between the proportions of type II eells and that of PC-10  immunoreaetive eells (eontin­ geney eoeffieient= 0.76, p<O.OOOl)T. he mean area of AgNORsof type II eells was greater than in type1 cells both in benign and malignant lesions. The mean area of AgNORS of type I eells was almost superimposable in benign and malignant lesions but in malignant lesions  the mean area  of AgNORs of type II eells  was  slightly  greater  -but     not  sig­ nifieantly different-     than  in benign   lesions.   It is concluded  that  differenees   in  AgNOR  expression between benign   and  malignant   breast  lesions  are mostly due  to  the  different  proportion    of type  II cells -whieh     is  a  closely  related   to  the  growth fraction-    rather  than  to  variation   of  the  AgNOR content  of  individual   eells,  whieh   might   refleet malignaney or various  kinetie  parameters.
